With every step, I hope to raise awareness and support for this incredible charity that has made a profound impact on my life.
On November 29, 2023, my life changed forever.
I had been feeling unwell for over a week, with persistent shortness of breath. After struggling to secure a GP appointment, I made my way to an urgent care centre, where I was diagnosed with an upper respiratory tract infection. I was prescribed antibiotics and an inhaler, but admittedly, I was sceptical about the diagnosis. Despite my doubts, I decided to give the antibiotics a chance and hoped for improvement.
The following morning, I awoke to a drastically swollen and painful leg. Nevertheless, I felt a sense of security returning to work at the hospital where I’m employed. Unfortunately, approximately four hours later, I fell ill at work and was given the shocking diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), multiple bilateral pulmonary embolisms (PEs), and right heart strain.
Emerging from my hospital stay, I felt a wave of fear and isolation wash over me. I had little information on what to expect in the days, weeks, and months ahead. It was later that I learned I had an inherited thrombophilia, a condition that has affected five members of my family, two of whom tragically lost their lives to this condition.
It was during this time that I discovered Thrombosis UK, an organisation that became an invaluable source of support. Their app was incredibly informative, the webinars were enlightening, and the Facebook group connected me with others who understood my struggles.
As a long-time runner, I felt compelled to give back and express my gratitude to Thrombosis UK for their life-changing support. I embarked on a mission to raise funds for this worthy cause. Over the past few months, I have completed several runs and walks, including half marathons, 10k races, and a 25km walk—all to benefit Thrombosis UK.
Looking ahead, I am excited to announce that in 2025, I will participate in the London Landmarks Half Marathon and have also signed up for the London Marathon My Way, where I plan to complete the marathon distance in one day. Thrombosis UK will be my charity of choice as long as I am able to run or walk, honouring the family members I’ve lost to this condition and those who bravely continue to survive it.
