I had a bilateral PE in 2013, but was initially sent home from A&E with antibiotics despite classic symptoms/risk factors and a strong family history of thrombosis because my d dimer was negative. I was 31 at the time and a keen runner.
I felt very alone during recovery partly because the medical focus was on getting me well enough to return to work and a basic level of fitness rather than back to the level of fitness and activity I was used to. There was very little support available to me in 2013 and no consideration of the mental impact of suddenly becoming very ill and not being able to do the thing I love most.
