My name is Sophie Beck, I am twenty-four years old. I was diagnosed with a DVT in September 2020, I was twenty-three at the time and unfortunately since then I have developed post thrombotic syndrome.

In August 2020 I underwent surgery for stenting which was unsuccessful but is due to be reattempted in November 2021. I have looked at your website since my clot happened last year trying to understand what has happened.

I now work with a Personal Trainer twice a week to help my leg and keep it mobilised which has helped so much mentally and especially since my first surgery was unsuccessful it’s helped massively having him. It also gives me independence twice a week to switch off from what’s happening. I could have let the unsuccessful surgery destroy me in August, but I am still going to the gym to clear my mind and do what I can with my leg. It gives you a sense of control and proudness that you aren’t letting it win even though I do find post thrombotic syndrome very distressing.

I have a constant swollen leg and pain and do feel alone with what I am going through, which I think is due to my age and the rarity of what has happened. I would love to help young people like me who may have had a DVT or post thrombotic syndrome by sharing tips about different aspects of living with DVT. For example, what exercise we can do, what we can do to keep us distracted on the bad days. I want to show young people that we can still be confident with a swollen leg and know that thrombosis doesn’t have to take over our lives and things do get better.

I remain hopeful for brighter days ahead, knowing that in this exact moment for whatever reason we are supposed to be in it. We will all come out of the storm and be much stronger for it. I hope that my next surgery is soon and successful so I can move on with my life and be clot free.
