VTE Risk Assessment Tools CurrentlY USED IN THE UK
Listed is a selection of VTE risk assessment tools provided by UK Royal Colleges, the Department of Health and professional organisations. This list is not exhaustive but intended to highlight VTE risk assessments for different adult patient cohorts.
Suspicion of a VTE
If a VTE is suspected, the Wells score can help in assessing whether to proceed with further diagnostic testing (eg ultrasound) for a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE).
If the Wells score indicates a DVT or PE is ‘unlikely’ then the patient should be offered:
- a D‑dimer test with the result available within 4 hours or
- if the D‑dimer test result cannot be obtained within 4 hours, offer interim therapeutic anticoagulation while awaiting the result
