Suspicion of a VTE

Wells Score

If a VTE is suspected, the Wells score can help in assessing whether to proceed with further diagnostic testing (eg ultrasound) for a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). 

NICE Guidance 158 (NG158) provides a visual summary and guidance

If the Wells score indicates a DVT or PE is ‘unlikely’ then the patient should be offered:

  • a D‑dimer test with the result available within 4 hours or
  • if the D‑dimer test result cannot be obtained within 4 hours, offer interim therapeutic anticoagulation while awaiting the result
