VTE GUIDELINES
Delivery of safe and effective medical care is led by evidenced-based recommendations from professional, national and international organisations. In the UK the authority that delivers most guidance across multiple disease areas is the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
Guidance published by NICE is developed by independent committees which include professional, lay members and representatives by stakeholders. Stakeholder groups are also invited to respond to consultations on specific topics.
Quality Standards are a set of specific and concise statements that describe the standards of care that patients should expect and that should be met by the health service, together with measurable markers of good practice. They are designed to be challenging, yet, achievable, and to drive improvements in care.
As well as improving best practice and outcomes for patients, quality standards form the basis of many clinical auditing processes and offer healthcare leaders a way to examine the clinical performance of their organisation.
For individuals and their families / carers, receiving care, quality standards enable them to better understand what services they should expect from their health and social care provider.
