Thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (blood clots) are not uncommon and remain a global health issue. Thrombosis affects thousands of people globally and in the UK.

Yet until Thrombosis UK was founded, there had been little collaboration between patients and clinicians to raise awareness of thrombosis and the urgent need for further research in order to extend understanding of the condition.

Annually, Thrombosis UK offers Research Grants and Travel Fellowships for healthcare professionals and scientists whose study will help improve the experience and outcomes of VTE patents or extend the understanding of thrombosis.

Thrombosis UK is also active in participating in research, including participating in and sitting on research review committees.

Together with our mission to extend awareness and increase education, Thrombosis UK’s research strategy seek to:

  • Improve understanding
  • Inform prevention, treatment and management
  • Protect those at risk and improve the outcomes for everyone affected by thrombosis.

Our mission supports the World Health Assembly’s global target of reducing premature deaths by non-communicable disease by 25% by 2025.

It also supports the World Health Organisation’s global action plan for the prevention of and control of non-communicable diseases between 2013 and 2020.
