Kim’s story embodies the mental and physical efforts that go into being positive, fearless, and strong. Well done, Kim!
‘Ten days after a planned surgical procedure, I woke up to find my left leg more than double the size of my right. What followed was probably the most difficult few weeks of my life. I had an extensive clot from my tummy to my ankle on investigation it was discovered I had May-Thurner Syndrome which, combined with the surgery was the cause of my blood clot. I couldn’t walk and was in and out of the hospital for weeks, even having to rely on a wheelchair.
‘Having led a very active and happy life with my young family, I dreamed of returning to my normal life and having the opportunity to run—something I had never done before. I told myself I would if I could.
With the support and suggestions from the Thrombosis UK group, I sought the opinion of a specialist. After discussing my options and what would suit me, I underwent a thrombectomy and had two stents fitted from my tummy to my thigh.
As soon as I was home, I set my goal to run. And as soon as I was able to, I started very slowly.
‘I’m now five months post-extensive clot, and I have officially hit my goal of running 5k!
I’m also back in the gym 3-4 times a week, hitting my 10k steps a day, and am determined to run 10k by October, during which I will fundraise for Thrombosis UK.
Instead of saying “I have to” I now have so much gratitude for the fact, “I get to!”
I want to share my story to help inspire others because I know how sad and hopeless it can feel when diagnosed.
Our journeys aren’t linear and are all different, but I hope this brings some positivity and encouragement to those who might need it.’
Don’t give up, manifest it, believe it! We’re in this together.
