This practical leaflet is designed to help patients feel more confident and informed when speaking with their healthcare team about suspected or confirmed blood clots. It provides clear, structured questions covering symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care—supporting better understanding, shared decision-making, and safer management of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE).
If you are worried about your care, feel you have not been listened to, or want help to speak up, you have the right to ask questions, raise concerns and make a complaint. This page explains practical steps you can take and where to get support.
Self-advocacy means speaking up about your needs, concerns and preferences so that you can be actively involved in decisions about your care. It can help you understand your diagnosis and treatment options, make sure important information is not missed, and feel more confident asking for support when something does not seem right. You do not have to manage this alone — you can ask a trusted person, PALS (see below), an advocate or another support service to help you prepare questions, attend appointments or raise concerns.
Remember – Self-advocacy is a form of self-care!
You can ask for a second opinion if you are unsure about a diagnosis, treatment plan or decision about your care. This does not mean your care will automatically be transferred or that another opinion will be offered in every situation, but your doctor should explain your options and how to request one. It can help to say clearly what you are worried about and what you would like another clinician to review.
The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) offers free and confidential advice, support and information on health-related matters. PALS provides a point of contact for patients, families and carers, and is usually available through local hospitals and NHS trusts in England.
PALS can help answer questions, explain NHS processes, support you to resolve concerns informally, and tell you how to make a complaint if the issue cannot be resolved quickly.
To contact PALS, ask the hospital, NHS trust or service for its PALS details, search for your nearest PALS service on the NHS website, or ask NHS 111 for details of your local PALS team.
England – Find patient advice and liaison services (PALS) – NHS
Wales – NHS Wales complaints and concerns: Putting Things Right | GOV.WALES
Scotland – PASS | Patient Advice and Support Service Scotland
Northern Ireland – Ask about the complaints procedure locally.
If you are making, or thinking about making, a complaint about NHS care in England, you may be able to get free help from an NHS complaints advocate. An advocate can help you understand the complaints process, write a complaint letter, prepare for meetings and attend meetings with you. An NHS complaints advocate cannot make the complaint for you, investigate your complaint, or give medical or legal advice, but they can support you at any stage of the complaints process.
