National Thrombosis Week is Thrombosis UK’s annual awareness week, when we bring together patients and health care professionals.
The VTE Awards celebrate pioneers excelling in VTE prevention, management, and patient care.
Join in with the global WTD movement on the 13th October every year.
Venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is the leading cause of maternal death in the UK during pregnancy and puerperium, according to the 2025 MBRRACE report.
Our campaign aims to raise awareness of VTE risk during pregnancy and the postpartum period among the public and health care professionals, promote early VTE risk assessment in pregnancy, and preventative care. We aim to bring together parliamentarians, healthcare professionals, patient organisations and maternity services, the campaign seeks to ensure that every one and especially pregnant woman receives timely information about blood clot risks, symptoms and prevention strategies.
This campaign promotes the use of the Thrombosis UK Early Pregnancy Blood Clot Risk Assessment Questionnaire, which is an evidence based VTE risk assessment tool designed to be used by women themselves in early pregnancy and also healthcare professions, so that women at high risk of VTE in early pregnancy are identified and receive prevention early, before they even register with maternity care. It was made by an expert and patient team working with NHS England, using modern evidance base and the 2025 MBRRACE report data showing a high rate of VTE deaths on early pregnancy. Early recognition, appropriate thromboprophylaxis and prompt treatment can save lives and reduce avoidable maternal harm.
Campaign objectives:
Alicia Kearns MP said in a debate on healthcare in pregnancy following the Amos and Ockendon reports on Tuesday 30th June.
“This week last year, I had multiple pulmonary emboli only a few weeks after giving birth. I am very grateful to Dr Laura Stephens, who saved my life and then was punished for ordering the test which found the emboli. Blood clots are the No. 1 cause of death in pregnant and post-partum women, and yet there is not a word about their risk in any pregnancy pack given out in this country. The national action plan will fail if it does not tackle blood clots as the No. 1 cause of maternal deaths. Will the Health Secretary kindly meet me and work with me, so that together we can save lives?”
At Thrombosis UK, we were delighted to see Alicia Kearns MP raise the vital issue of blood clot prevention and care during pregnancy through a series of detailed written parliamentary questions. Ensuring that women receive appropriate risk assessment, timely diagnosis, and effective prevention measures is essential, given that blood clots remain a leading cause of maternal death.
As an organisation dedicated to improving awareness and patient outcomes, we welcomed the opportunity for greater parliamentary scrutiny of this important issue. However, we were disappointed by the responses provided, which we feel did not fully address the challenges faced by women at risk of thrombosis during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
We remain committed to working with policymakers, healthcare professionals, and patients to improve awareness, prevention, and standards of care. We would welcome more detailed responses from Yvette Cooper MP and her new team.

The 2025 MBRRACE-UK Saving Lives, Improving Mothers’ Care report highlights that thrombosis and thromboembolism (VTE) remain the leading direct cause of maternal death in the UK during pregnancy and up to six weeks postpartum. Given the significant burden of preventable morbidity and mortality associated with VTE, early identification and management of women at increased risk is essential.
