Pregnancy and VTE Information for Healthcare Professionals

Pregnancy and the postpartum period are associated with a significantly increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). According to recent MBRRACE-UK reports, thrombosis and thromboembolism remain the leading direct cause of maternal death in the UK during pregnancy and up to six weeks postpartum, highlighting the ongoing importance of effective prevention, assessment and management strategies.

Early Pregnancy BLOOD CLOt Risk Assessment

 The Early Pregnancy Blood Clot Risk Assessment Tool is a simple questionnaire designed for use in early pregnancy, before the first antenatal (booking) appointment. It helps identify women with significant VTE risk factors, such as a previous history of thrombosis, inherited thrombophilia, obesity, severe hyperemesis, or current anticoagulant use, who may require urgent review and thromboprophylaxis. By supporting earlier identification of high-risk women, the tool promotes timely referral to maternity services, facilitates formal VTE risk assessment, and enables preventive treatment to be initiated as early as possible.

Developments in VTE in Pregnancy

In this webinar we explore Innovations in preventing VTE in early pregnancy, The MATRON Study: A Multicentre UK Audit of High and Intermediate-High-Risk Pulmonary Embolism in Pregnancy, VTE Risk Identification and Prevention in Abortion Care, RCOG Guidelines in pregnancy. This webinar was presented as part of the National Thrombosis Week Conference 2026.

MBRRACE-UK Saving Lives, Improving Mothers' Care annual report

The 2025 MBRRACE-UK Saving Lives, Improving Mothers’ Care report highlights that thrombosis and thromboembolism (VTE) remain the leading direct cause of maternal death in the UK during pregnancy and up to six weeks postpartum. Given the significant burden of preventable morbidity and mortality associated with VTE, early identification and management of women at increased risk is essential.

VTE in pregnancy webinar resources: A national picture

This was a meeting organised by NHS Resolution, which manages medico-legal claims against the NHS, to review current progress in the prevention and management of blood clots during pregnancy. Professor Beverley Hunt opened the meeting with an overview of the current landscape, highlighting key challenges and areas for improvement. This was followed by a powerful presentation from Fern, who shared her personal experience of developing a blood clot during pregnancy, providing valuable insight into the patient perspective.
