Pregnancy & Postpartum VTE Information for Patients

Understanding your risk of blood clots during and after pregnancy

Being pregnant, and the weeks after you have your baby, can make you more likely to get a blood clot. Doctors call this VTE (venous thromboembolism).

There are two types of VTE:

  • DVT – a clot, usually in your leg
  • PE – when a clot moves to your lungs

Blood clots don’t happen often. But if one does happen, it’s important to spot it and get help quickly.

This section on blood clots and pregnancy and afterwards will help you understand your risk, know what signs to look out for, and feel confident talking to your healthcare team. Blood clots are rare, and this information is here to support you, not to worry you.

Early awareness, assessment, and prevention can help keep you and your baby safe during and after pregnancy.

Risks

You may have a higher risk if you:

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms of a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) may include

Symptoms of a pulmonary embolism (PE) may include:

If you experience any of these symptoms seek urgent medical advice or 999 emergency help.

What you can do to help prevent a blood clot

Pregnancy makes clots more likely for everyone. Taking simple steps can lower this risk. For women with a higher risk, extra prevention may be needed, such as medicine.

Things you can do…

Early Pregnancy BLOOD CLOt Risk Assessment Questionnaire

The Early Pregnancy Blood Clot Risk Assessment Questionnaire is designed to identify women who are at increased risk of developing a blood clot (venous thromboembolism, or VTE) in early pregnancy, even before their first maternity booking appointment. It helps women and healthcare professionals recognise important risk factors that may require urgent review and preventative treatment. It is evidence based and the work of a large group of experts and patient representatives, working with NHS England.

MBRRACE-UK Saving Lives, Improving Mothers' Care annual report

The 2025 MBRRACE-UK Saving Lives, Improving Mothers’ Care report highlights that thrombosis and thromboembolism (VTE) remain the leading direct cause of maternal death in the UK during pregnancy and up to six weeks postpartum. Given the significant burden of preventable morbidity and mortality associated with VTE, early identification and management of women at increased risk is essential.
