Research is essential to improving the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and support available for people affected by blood clots (venous thromboembolism – VTE). At Thrombosis UK, we believe that the voices and lived experiences of patients, families, and carers must shape every stage of research.
Whether you are newly diagnosed, living with long-term effects, supporting someone with a clot, or simply passionate about improving care, your insight can make a real difference.
Patients and the public help researchers to:
Your involvement helps ensure research leads to genuine improvements in care and quality of life.
There are many ways to contribute, and you can choose what feels right for you:
Help researchers shape study design, patient materials, questionnaires, and priorities.
Give feedback on leaflets, study summaries, or consent forms so they are clear and easy to understand.
Your lived experience can highlight gaps in care and help researchers focus on what matters most.
You may be invited to join a clinical trial, survey, interview, or long-term follow‑up study. Participation is always voluntary.
Share study opportunities with your community or networks to support wider participation.
Anyone with experience of:
You do not need any medical or research knowledge — lived experience is what matters most.
Taking part in research involvement activities is flexible. You may:
You can choose how much or how little you want to be involved. Some activities are one-off; others may continue over several months.
Travel costs or involvement payments may be offered, depending on the project.
We regularly share opportunities for patients, families, and carers to get involved in research. These may include:

July 2025:
We invite patients living with severe thrombophilia to participate in an important research opportunity.
We also invite healthcare professionals and partner organisation to share this survey.
This research initiative aims to gather critical insights directly from patients to inform global efforts in improving diagnosis, treatment protocols and overall patient outcomes.
The survey is for patients living with severe thrombophilia, including:
Developed by Thrombosis UK along with World Thrombosis Day and with international collaborators and medical experts, the survey is designed to capture the real experiences of people living with severe thrombophilia and to help shape the future of treatment.
This research has the potential to influence medical guidelines, treatment approaches and support services worldwide.
Why patient voices are important
By sharing your perspective, you can help:
The survey will take no more than 5 minutes and can be accessed by clicking the link below. For healthcare professionals, please download the flyer below and share it with your patients.
Thank you for considering this opportunity. Together, we can work toward better care and outcomes for everyone affected by thrombophilia.

#1 Opportunity!
Help improve postnatal care for women. We’re developing a clinical trial to prevent blood clots after childbirth—and we need your insight.
If you are a woman aged 18–55 who has experienced a DVT or PE, your feedback matters.
Interested in taking part? Click the link to take part in the 5 minute survey.
#2 Opportunity!
The Thrombo‑Stop trial is investigating whether the anticoagulant apixaban can safely reduce blood clots in people with lung cancer receiving systemic anticancer treatment (SACT), such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy or targeted therapies. Lung cancer carries a high risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), which can seriously impact quality of life. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either apixaban or a placebo for six months. Recruitment will run from 2026–2029 across 40–50 UK centres.
Interested in taking part? Speak to your lung cancer team or treating clinician to see if you may be eligible.
#3 Opportunity!
A team from Imperial College London are seeking a patient representative to join the ACUTE project which is currently preparing to apply for grant funding. Read the plain language summary.
The team is seeking a patient/public member to be a co-applicant for this project at 2% FTE. Involvement would include reviewing study protocol, patient-facing materials and attendance at study meetings depending on availability.
If you would like to participate or have further questions, please contact Dr Karen Soh at [email protected].
#4 Opportunity!
Add your opinion
The ACUTE project team invites interested individuals to participate in a survey to share their thoughts on the study.
