About World Thrombosis Day

World Thrombosis Day is held annually on 13 October, marking the birthday of Rudolf Virchow, the pioneering German physician who helped advance our understanding of thrombosis. Virchow’s work on blood clots and disease processes laid the foundations of modern pathology and continues to influence medicine today.

Illuminating a building, landmark or monument for WTD on or around the 13th October serves as a powerful visual reminder to raise awareness about the risks of blood clots.

How can You Support Our Light Up Campaign locally?

Getting Started

Identify a Landmark

Select a building that is highly visible within your community and can help raise awareness. This could be a well-known landmark, government building, hospital, community centre, local business, or even your own home.

Reach Out

Contact the building owners or relevant authorities to request permission to illuminate the building. The organisation’s media, communications, or facilities team can often direct you to the appropriate contact. Please see our email template you can use, click the button below to download. Once your illumination has been confirmed, please let us know by emailing [email protected].

Coordinate and Promote

Plan the logistics of the illumination and help spread the word. Promote the event through social media, press releases, local news outlets, community groups, and organisational networks. Encouraging others to share the campaign will help maximise awareness and engagement.

Capture and Share

Take photographs and videos of the illuminated building and share them across your social media channels, website, and with local media outlets. Your support helps extend the reach of the campaign and raise awareness of thrombosis. Don’t forget to tag Thrombosis UK and World Thrombosis Day (WTD) in your posts.
