Below is a guide to everything you need to know about fundraising for Thrombosis UK.

Your Fundraising Journey starts here.....

Fundraising for a Thrombosis UK can be any task or event that raises money, from selling cakes at work, social media birthday fundraisers, quiz nights, football tournaments to more traditional sponsored events.

Thrombosis UK is here to support you through your fundraising journey.

Undecided what to do?

Below are details of many types of events we have supported fundraiser through. Find about more about what’s involved, tips for success and most importantly how to register to take part.

Organising a Sale, Raffle, Tombola or an Event

Whether it’s cake sales, book sales, lotteries, raffles or live events, these are great ways to raise money for Charity.

What’s Involved

When planning, it’s important to consider:

  • How am I going to hold this sale – on line or at a venue?
  • Do I need to book a venue?
  • What am I going to sell? How will I source my items?
  • How many prizes you need, especially for a tombola.

Food and drink

There are many regulations governing the use of food and even if you are only providing food on a one-off basis you must still comply with these.

For specific advice on food safety legislation please contact the Environmental Health Services department at your local council.

We recommend that you contact your local authority before your event to discuss with them what you plan to do.

Every person involved in the preparation and serving of food to the public must have a basic understanding of food hygiene.

If you plan to sell alcohol, you need to have a liquor licence. You get this from your local Magistrates Court.

Entertainment

If you are planning to have some form of entertainment (this means two or more people performing or dancing) in a building, which does not already hold a Public Entertainments Licence, you need to get one. This licence is provided by your local authority.

Raffles and Lotteries

There are three kinds of lottery or raffle and each has different rules and regulations. These are governed by The Lotteries and Amusements Act 1976 (as amended).

For the most up to date information on organising a lottery or raffle,

For the most up to date information on organising a lottery or raffle, visit the Gambling Commission website.

Help

Making sure you have enough helper preparing and running your event is important! Allow plenty of time to secure reliable helpers and to talk with them about what help and time they can give, so all tasks are covered.

Advertise

Once you have all the above in place you will need to advertise your event. Social media especially local community groups are brilliant for this.

Running your event

Live events may accept cash payments, but many, as well as online events use platforms such as Paypal, Just Giving, Facebook Donate to collect payments. This makes collecting instant, easy and keeps a running total of funds raised!

For cash payments, our Donate page shares information on how to pay in the funds raised at your event.

  • Does the venue offer enough space / parking for what I am planning?
  • Will I need catering?
  • Will I need helpers – from setting up to referees!
  • Will I need to hire other support such as a disco?
  • Cost of hire.

Funding….

  • Do I have funds to cover initial outlay such as hire costs?
  • Will I want to run any other activities with the event – for example, a raffle?

Legal considerations….

This is very important and needs to be considered if you are running a raffle, a lottery or selling alcohol.

Websites to guide you through ensuring your event meets all legal requirements can be found here [LINK: https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/public-and-players/guide/fundraising-prize-draws-raffles-and-lotteries]

Insurance

Managing the event

  • Will the event need to be ticketed or do participants need to sign up prior to the event date?
  • Make sure you have plenty of supporters to help organise and help on the day at the event.
